I’m Yekaterina, and each time I go to work I use the Moscow subway (Metro), like millions of other people. Each time I see an elderly man standing at the entrance of our Metro station. Just standing there, reading the Bible, singing songs and telling those who hurry to the next train that God loves them. So often, I wanted to stop by and talk to him. But like all the others, I was in a hurry...
Yesterday,I went to work earlier than usual. There he was, like every day, singing a song called “How good to praise the Lord, for he made my soul sing”. Just about to walk through the entrance to the Metro station, I understood that this time, I had to return and go to this man.
We started talking.
- You’re here every day?
- Yes.
- Do many people stop?
- Depending…today a young Muslim came to me, holding a bottle of beer in his hand. Hey old man, he said, why are you telling all of this? Look at me. I’m alcoholic. No-one loves me. No-one needs me. And you just stand here singing songs. We had a long talk, and then we prayed. And then the young man threw the bottle away and said,I’m tired of this.
- What's your name?
-Alexander.
Alexander tells me that he accepted Christ at the age of 42, and that God called him to go and talk to people about Him. Although, it’s hard for him, he’s actually afraid to talking to other people. How many times had he went out, standing silently on the street with the Bible in his hand, walking home without having talked to a single person.
As we talk, two other people stopped and talked to Alexander.
Then he tells me: You know, Yekaterina, in the past, I used to not just stand next to the Metro station, but I used to travel across Moscow on these trains. Always together with Christ. I go to one station, debark the train and talk to people about salvation. Then I take another train, go to the next station, talk to people and so on, through all of Moscow. I share the Gospel in trains, in shopping malls, on the big squares. I was even on Red Square, where I almost got stopped by the police. But on the next day, I was there again, and they just stopped paying attention to me.
Last March, when the entire nation was on quarantine, I cried. For I thought I could no longer tell other people the truth. Then I prayed and went out. Standing here, talking to people. I was chased away and almost punished…
We talked for40 minutes. I was late for work, but I didn’t care. It was worth it!
On the next day, I see him again, standing at the Metro entrance, singing… I purchased a monthly ticket for him for a whole month free ride on all Metro trains, just so that he could go on with his ministry. When I gave it to him, he broke out in tears.
- Dear Yekaterina, he said, just yesterday I got so sad about not being able to drive around sharing the Gospel. I prayed to God. And here you brought this gift fromHim… Tomorrow, I’ll go to the Red Square again! Yes, yes, yes, early in the morning.People need the Word! Once He has made this gift to me, there must be someone waiting for me there tomorrow! An unsaved soul will be there, waiting for HisWord!
And then he added:
- Listen what happened to me recently! I went to the Metro station just like every day. But you know what? No people there! Some public holiday, and no-one there! I got so disappointed. I prayed: Lord, where is the crowd I can share the Gospel with?Just about to leave, I noticed a man sitting on a bench, about 30 years old. I started talking to him and found out that he was about to commit suicide! He was in such a despair, and before killing himself he’d thought to sit on that bench for a minute or two… I prayed with him for a long time. Later, I saw him several times again…
Alexander is talking to me with a smile on his face and eyes beaming with joy.
I thank God for giving me the courage to talk to him, and I feel ashamed because now I know he’s out there standing in the frost and in the snow, for hours and hours, while I’m sitting comfortably in the church building ready to be upset whenever something is not going my way…
He’s God’s angel on the streets of Moscow.
